Tam o’ Shanter

 

Inspiring bold John Barleycorn!

What dangers thou canst make us scorn!

Wi’ tippeny, we fear na evil!

Wi’ usquabae we fave the devil! –

The swats sae ream’d in Tammies’s noddle,

Fair play, he car’d na deils a boddle.

But Maggie stood, right sair astonish’d,

Till, by the heel and hand admonish’d,

She ventured forward on the light;

And, wow! Tam saw an unco sight!

 

Warlocks and witches in a dance;

Nae cotillion brent-new frae France,

But hornpipes, jigs strathspeys, and reels,

Put life and mettle in their heels.

A winnock-bunker in the east,

There sat auld Nick, in shape ‘o beast;  (120)

Estimulant, John Barleycorn, audaç!

Els perills més grans ens fa menysprear!

Amb cerversa, no ens fa por res;

Amb whisky, el dimoni encalcem!

En un mar de cervesa en Tam nedava,

I el dimoni, bah, gota li importava.

La Maggie, atònita, es quedà aturada  

Fins que mà i esperó van atiar-la,

Cap a la llum s’aventurà a fer un pas,

I en Tam veié un espectacle fascinant!     

 

Bruixots i bruixes feien una dansa; 

No un cotilló vingut fa poc de França,

Sinó balls escocesos, tots ells, tots,

Plens de vida i caràcter als talons

A l’est, a la finestra d’una alvoca,

Hi seia el Vell Nick, de bestial forma. (120)
